RE: Data on Porous Surfaces -Reply

The copy of this document in our office says "Draft Report for Comment."
When I looked at the NRC web site, it says "Pre-published Draft." Is this
document still in draft or do I need to look somewhere else? If it is still in
draft... what is its status... I mean are people using it anyway... is it being
generally accepted? What is holding it up? Isn't most of this stuff in
MARSSIM? I have only glanced at it, but it looks familiar. :-)

You may want to look at NUREG-1507 "Minimum Detectable
Concentrations With
Typical Radiation Survey Instruments for Various Contaminants and Field
Conditions". This discusses several conditions that may impact you
survey
results, (i.e. effects of oils/paints/water/dust, as well as, different
types of material wood/tile/concrete...). I think this document can be
downloaded from the NRC home page. Some folks at ORNL who put this
together
and may have more information. This also discusses some new
MDC/total
activity equations utilizing two efficiencies - one is the instrument
efficiency - two is the source efficiency / surface efficiency. This is
also recommending the surveyor use experimentally determined surface
efficiencies for anticipated field conditions.

Has anyone out started utilizing any of this new equations and or any
comments on their viability/cost effectiveness for decommissioning
activities?

I am trying to find some data or, preferably, reports or
articles, which
deal with the expected quantity of rad contamination
which
could be
trapped in the pores of a porous surface and remain
undetected while an
alpha scan shows the surface to be at or below some
release
criteria.
Surely, someone has done an experimental or theoretical
study of this -
I am just after a very rough estimate of what we might
have
hidden in
the pores of a closed cell foam rubber. Data for large cell
porous
ceramics or weathered wood would probably be quite
relevant.
