Re: ICRP Cliff Notes
Unfortunately, it's not quite that convenient. However, to some extent, the
NCRP reports serve as "Clff Notes" for some ICRP reports. For example, NCRP
Report No. 84, "General Concepts for the Dosimetry of Internally Deposited
Radionuclides," attempts to explain ICRP 26 and ICRP 30. As a general rule,
I've found that the NCRP reports indicate the breadth and depth of knowledge
you need for the ABHP exam. Some reports that I've found especially useful
are:
NCRP 33, "Medical X-Ray and Gamma-Ray Protection for Energies Up to 10 MeV -
Equipment Design and Use" (This is what I used. It's been superseded by
NCRP
Report No. 102.) (Medical questions usually scare power reactor HP's, but
are usually quite easy if you understand the terminology.)
NCRP 49, "Structural Shielding Design and Evaluation for Medical Use of
X-Rays
and Gamma Rays of Energies Up to 10 MeV"
NCRP 50, "Environmental Radiation Measurements"
NCRP 51, "Radiation Protection Guidelines for 0.1 - 100 MeV Particle
Accelerator Facilities" (Accelerator problems in Part 2 are generally
avoided
by non-accelerator HP's, but are also usually quite easy if you understand
the
nomenclature and "tribal customs".)
NCRP 58, "A Handbook of Radioactivity Measurements Procedures, 2nd edition"
NCRP 62, "Tritium in the Environment"
I haven't kept up as much as I should, so there are probably some more
recent
reports that you should read. I also recommend the first chapter,
"Background
Information and Scientific Principles," of the BEIR V Report. (You could
call
this a "light BEIR".)
Good luck!
The opinions expressed are strictly mine.
It's not about dose, it's about trust.
