Re: X-rays or Strip Search? -Reply

Jimmy,

You are a good man!!!!! Stick to your guns!!! Well maybe not where you work but to your principals certainly.

You cut to the heart of the matter. I'm glad to see that someone knows the bottom line in radiology.....always get an order or perscription for the study!!!! If it (the whole body xray scan) isn't ordered by a "Doc" how can it be legal??? Since only qualified licensed physicians or medical practitioners can authorize the use of radiation on humans in every state, the exposure of a person without a "order or perscription" from a licensed physician is probably a violation of State law. Would any Docs do such a thing?

Also, if this scan is "prescribed" by a physician shouldn't the techs performing the study also be certified? I'll take a hit for plugging my own profession but Hey!!!! I worked hard to get my two national certifications and anyone doing whole body scans needs to be certified no matter how trivial the dose! In some states where certification/licensure is manditory for x-ray, nuke and therapy techs, dental assistants, hygienists, etc., a person performing these scans could be in violation of the State laws, unless exempted.

What about notification to pregnant females. I'll bet that is not being done. I don't think these notification requirements are exempted based on the trivial dose received.

And what about the State registration required for this machine. Every State I know of requres X-ray machines to be registered, even the ones at the airports. Are these puppies exempted from the process?

Probably, the most important question is one of reimbursement for the study. Does the penal institution get re-imbursed by Medicare/Medicade or other provider for the procedure authorized by the physician ? Do they launder the procedures thru their health unit for reimbursement????? :)

Just my thoughts!

You miss the point. It is not I who is being searched, rather it is I who is
being instructed to perform the X-ray exam. As a health care professional I
cannot ethically (and in many states legally) perform the exam without an
order by a Physician.
