Re: journal donations

When I visited the Radiation Oncolgy Dept. at the central cancer
hospital in Almaty (capitol by that time), Kazakhstan two years ago, I
learned that they hadn't received a single copy of any radiotherapy
journal or radiation biology journal since the Soviet Union collapse in
1991. Somebody tried to send them Radiat. Res. but they all disappeared
in Moscow. Kazakhstan has more than 17 million people distributed over
an area that is about five times larger than France. The tragedy of the
Aral lake belongs to Kaz. The country is extremely poor - the new
capitol (Akmola - northern part of the country -extremely cold winter
time) has had gas stoves for years but lacked gas for at least a year
around 1997. I saw a lot of bad details there, no warm water, dirt/earth
floors, very few light bulbs working in the hospital corridors etc
(please excuse this off topic expansion here). A direct contact with any
remaining university institutions may be of value for sending your old
copies of "Science" or whatever to these types of countries - there are
after all - still scientists there who read English. It is not many
years since (1993?) I heard that there was not a single copy of Radiat.
Res. for instance in several central east European countries.
