     As a contract technician, working in the commercial nuclear industry, it
has been my experience that you had to show not only a certain level of
competence to use and operate various survey meters, you also had to meet the
ANSI standards at a minimum.
    Granted you don't need to know how a car operates in order to drive one,
but there are minimum standards that are required to drive safely.
     I guess the point I am trying to make is, that one minor accident, caused
by ignorance, is going to cost you much more than the price you pay for a
competent technician.
