One other point of interest. The earth-ionosphere system acts as a
spherical resonant cavity with a fundamental frequency of about 8 Hz.
This leads to an observable ELF spectrum consisting of the first few
harmonics with sizeable intensity. The cavity is continually stimulated by
lightning.
