The new TLD service offered by Landauer (not a commercial plug!), based
on anion-deficient aluminum oxide TLDs, provides for a re-readable
record (up to 10 times, I believe) and a minimum detectable dose of 1
mrad.  The low sensitivity allows you to quickly decide if you need
monthly, quarterly, or even annual readout.  Even if you use an annual
readout, the potential missed dose is on the same order of magnitude as
that for a monthly readout using other TLD materials or film.  The
re-readability also provides for a "permanent" record for most practical
applications.
