RE: Americum [sic] check source offered for sale on eBay

I just checked the eBay listing for the item and noted that there is now a
statement that no license is required to possess the source because "This
item is an internal component from an industrial smoke detector. It does not
require a license to own."
Pretty nice price. It is now up to $97 for a component of a part of a smoke
detector. My question relates to whether it is still a valid "exempt item"
once the source has been removed from the detector. I remeber trying to
dispose of an Amercium source at Barnwell that someone had removed from the
detector housing. The Barnwell site required special approval because it
was no longer an intact detector which they were authorized to receive.
