Re: Radiological vs. Radiation

Dear Douglas,

1) Radiological Protection x Radiation Protection

Both expression are correct.
We can found both expressions at national and international organizations.
At National Organization we have the following examples: National
Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) and National Council on Radiation
Protection and Measurements (NCRP)
At International Organization we have the following examples: International
Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and the International Radiation
Protection Association (IRPA)
The IAEA use the expression Radiation Protection, as we can find in its
documents, starting with the IAEA's top document, the Basic Safety
Standards, Safety Series 115 -- page 4 -- Basic Principles; -- "The
principles of radiation protection and safety...." or in the Safety Series
76 -- Radiation Protection Glossary.

2) Radiation Safety Officer x Radiological Safety Officer
2a) Radiation Protection Officer
2b) Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) x Radiation Protection Officer (RPO)

With reference 2, also I believe both are correct, at least in USA. My
opinion is based on the DOE Radiological Control Manual Glossary

Radiological Workers" ... A "radiological worker" may also be
referred to as a "radiation worker" or a "radworker."
If you can use both expressions for worker, of course you can also use them
in the case of Radiation Safety Officer or Radiological Safety Officer.

2a) The term RSO is usual in the United States and other english language
countries. However, the IAEA use the designation Radiation Protection
Officer (RPO).

2b) Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) x Radiation Protection Officer (RPO)

This is also a good exercise to consider both expressions. Have them the
same attributes or are there differences? I have my oppinion on this,
however lets check yours, first.
