I doubt that he is blowing anything (smoking something maybe) - his
intent is to scare people into believing what he believes, and to that -
his tactics appear to work.  My impression is that he has not made a
good movie since Hunt for Red October - so he wants attention.
Scientific answers are not popular or attention grabbing and they never
will be.
