Nuclear Weapons Building On Fault Line
As if the stolen nuclear secrets isn't enough to "rock" Los Alamos!
Nuclear Weapons Building On Fault Line - (LOS ALAMOS) -- A
fault line may NOT be the best place for nuclear weapons research
center... but that's where the Cold War-era building at Los Alamos
National Laboratory sits. The Chemistry and Metallurgy Research
Building is the home for experiments with plutonium and other
radioactive materials... as well as other work crucial to maintaining
nuclear weapons. Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board
Chairman John Conway says the Department of Energy should
replace the 550-thousand-square-foot structure because of
earthquake threats and other safety problems. Conway says his
agency has NOT made a formal recommendation to Energy
Secretary Bill Richardson to replace the building. Conway says
he's NOT worried about safety to the public in the short term... but
the future of the building has been in doubt since evidence surfaced
that the earthquake fault runs underneath it.
