This also brings up the issue of disposing of the little lead pigs 
that research radionuclides are shipped in.

At this small facility, it's easy enough to monitor each pig, remove 
it from it's plastic outer container, and bring it to a local scrap 
yard.  Surely the larger universities couldn't do this on a large 
scale?  What are places with 100's of research labs doing with their lead 
pigs?  Tossing them as hazardous waste would be prohibitively 
expensive, and the vendors do not make it easy to return the pigs to 
them.
