One further point - in 1945 Russia had no sea-to-land invasion capability
at all. None had been needed up to that point in the war. A Russian
invasion of Japan would only have happened if the US provided the hardware
necessary along with the associated training. Otherwise, Russia would be
left to invade by parachute. They weren't going to invade Japan without our
approval and participation.
So, were the bombs necessary? Did the militarists hold sway in Japan or the
peace advocates? Well, it took TWO bombs to get a surrender. One wasn't
enough to pursuade whoever was in charge.
