RE: Late charges for unreturned badges

At the MIT CRSO meeting Emmett Barkley (Howard Hughes) reminded everyone about
the need to maintain our strong working relationships with PIs. He also
encouraged the group to fight against the temptation to be converted into an
extension of the regulatory agencies that we deal with on a daily basis....

Here at Stony Brook, following a film badge programmatic hit from a NYSDOH
inspection last year - we have been struggling a bit with this very issue of
(absent badges/ unused badges / too old badges). We handle about 1850
Badges/rings per month.

We performed a 10 month study and translated the results into an individual
account report card for the 119 film badge coordinators.

We provided a rating scale {perfect 100%, very good 90%, good 80%, fair 70%,
poor 60% and of course super poor
< 60%} in each area tabulated (absent badges, unused badges, too old badges).
The report cards were sent out with a bottom line quantifiable improvement %
target for 1999. A recent quarterly review indicated marked improvement in all
categories across the board. Groups that are not able to get with the program
(over badged category) are being dropped. Our film badge operational
improvement program also includes an education piece (the Cardiology Department
was our first things first stop) and the Radiation Safety Committee is
reviewing the program as a standing order of business.

The late $charge$ option is certainly a weapon that could be used but I think I
will save that one as a last resort for the new millennium.

Sincerely ,,
