Re: FW: X-Ray Radiation and Personnel Monitoring
Personnel Monitoring is only required as follows:
(1) If under quarterly limits, the requirement is that the dose is
expected to exceed 25% of the regulatory limit (1.25 rem). Therefore,
if the individual is expected to exceed 312 mrem/qtr, monitoring is
required.
(2) If under annual limits, the requirement is that the dose is
expected to exceed 10% of the regulatory limit (5 rem). Therefore, if
the individual is expected to exceed 500 mrem/yr, monitoring is
required.
To provide monitoring at levels below this level is a facility
decision, based on many factors, such as potential litigation
concerns, the student's attitudes and concerns, etc. This is a
decision that each facility must make.
Area badges could be considered, and a single badge for a group could
be considered. Your task would be to correlate the dose back to an
individual, and be able to fend off adversity when there is
controversy stating that THIS specific dose can NOT be correlated
directly to a SPECIFIC individual.
You also need to consider the dose rate from the units where the
students are working. If there is a high potential dose, and the
anticipated annual or quarterly dose is expected to be below required
monitoring levels, you need to consider the potential dose from the
unit,, and potential problems.
Lots of factors to consider.
