HP Technician
The University of Missouri-Columbia Research Reactor (MURR) has an immediate
opening for a qualified Health Physics Technician. MURR is the highest
powered university research reactor (10MW) in the United States and performs
multiple neutron related research and production functions. See position
description below.
Essential Duties:
Provide Health Physics coverage for various experimentation and maintenance
activities associated with radiation/reactor facilities. Consult with and
advise radiation workers regarding experiments and general use of radiation
and radioactive material to define and minimize potential hazards. Perform
radioactive contamination analysis of samples. Prescribe, demonstrate and
verify proper use of survey instruments, film badges, extremity dosimeters,
pocket ionization chambers, protective clothing, decontamination of
materials and equipment and shielding. Perform and document surveys of areas
where radiation sources are being used. Maintain performance checks,
calibrations and NIST traceability for radiation detection instrumentation
used in analyses. Analyze routine, unknown and environmental samples and
assist in preparing a report on the results and significance of the
analyses. Perform indoctrination, information and training programs to
provide worker training in the handling of radioactive materials. Assist in
developing and reviewing Reactor Chemistry procedures and forms. Some
lifting is required.
Minimum Qualifications:
An Associate's degree in Health Physics or a related field or an equivalent
combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and
abilities can be acquired is necessary. Two to three years of experience in
health physics operations is necessary.
