static and alpha background?

One way to test for "static cling" as the source of background is to put the
PCM-2
 in a booth (plastic tent with finger curtain walls could be a
 temporary measure) and recirculate the air inside the tent through a
 portable HEPA unit. (coincidently Bartlett Services, Inc. sells a very
nice
 one!). The HEPA filter strips the radon daughters from the air. You
should
 se a noticeable difference in 3 to 5 hours, unless you have a build-up of
 Po-210.

 The same process will reduce levels of "noble gas" contamination on people
 who walk in/near coolant leaks in NPPs. The "noble gas" on clothing as
 actually the solid daughter products.

If the PCM has an enclosed background detector, then check for high
background in the
enclosed detector. That would be caused by bad gas. We changed to to high
purity P-5
gas at one site and solved a background problem that way.
