More nuclear electricity tax in Sweden
The Swedish politicians (Social democratic government, left party (former
communists) and the environmental ("green") party) took a decision today to
increase the tax on nuclear electricity by about 7-8%.
The spokesman ("Birger Schlaug") for the environmental party is, according
to the media, very happy about this - he has previously said that we must
"move away from a society where we use radioactivity". He also once (in
1987) wrote an article about radioactive releases during normal operation -
trying to frighten people without giving numbers. That time I responded by
pointing out that the calculated annual equivalent whole-body doses for the
releases in question to people living just outside the NPP were in the order
of 0.00001 mSv and compared this with the potassium 40 contribution from
your own body. Birger S. never replied however - instead one of his
collegues responded by discussing atomic bombs, and other side tracks.
Fortunately that particular newspaper understood enough of the essence to
give the topic the treatment it deserved.
