Re[2]: Misuse of Rad Symbol
Bob,
Yes, I did use the "S" word (stupid) in my email to ISHN, however it
was in the context of their use of the symbol in the way they did as
being a stupid thing to do since they are trying to promote
professionalism in health and safety. I stand by that assessment. I
still believe that their use of the rad symbol in the way they did was
a stupid thing for them to do. I've also traded a couple of other
emails with them on this subject, and their assertion is that there is
nothing whatsoever wrong with using this, or other, safety-related
symbols in a valid "marketing effort" (their words). I strongly
disagree.
If the HPS were to send out my annual dues notice with the biohazard
or poison symbol prominently displayed on the outside of the mailing
with the words THE END IS NEAR in large letters with it, I would call
that a stupid thing to do as well!
If you take offense at my use of the word, I'm sorry. While I would
choose my words much more carefully with others, I think any
publication espousing professional health and safety should know
better, and I told them so. There are rare occasions when the
Louisville Slugger teaching method is appropriate!

Mr. Rima,
I too receive a free subscription to ISHN, and look forward to it
regularly. I have gained a vast amount of help and information in my work
from that trade magazine. I did not receive a memo saying the end was
near with my September issue, so I can't really speak to this use of the
standard rad symbol. But if you stated or implied that they were stupid
in using that symbol, then I think that was a most unprofessional
characterization. We all should expect that a CHP, and Plenary member of
the HPS since 1983 (as the directory indicates you are) would choose
his/her words with care and consideration. We can't teach with a
Louisville Slugger.
A copy of this email will go to Dave Johnson. His response to you
seemed to me to be quite professional, not somewhat arrogant as you
suggest.
