Arcticle 'Blackest Spot on Earth' (Russia)

Dear Radsafers,

Please check the following:

<http://www.sptimes.ru/current/poisoned.htm>

This is the second article of series being published in St.Petersburg Times
in Russia, describing the history of 'plutonium plant' 'Mayak' in
Chelyabinsk region, where in 40's and 50's major contamination took place.

-----
The marijuana plants, the grass the cows feed on - everything grown in this
village emits up to 250 microrems per hour, or four times the radiation
scientists consider "acceptable."
-----
Between 1949 and 1951, Plutonium Plant dumped 76 million cubic meters of
highly toxic nuclear waste into the river Techa. The total radioactivity of
the waste thus ejected into the river came to 2.75 million curies.
-----
Today, Mayak continues to pour liquid waste into lake Karachai.
-----
Between 1949 and 1967, almost 188,000 people in the Chelyabinsk region
received radiation doses that exceeded acceptable levels by 70 times.
-----
etc....

Kind regards
