Alternative Iodine Administration Mechanism

The recent thread about methods of blocking iodine brought to mind a paper by
Moody, et al., (1988), "The Effects of Topical Povidone Iodine Solution on Serum
Iodide Levels and Thyroid Uptake of I-131 in Dogs," Health Physics 55:1(9-13).
They described what sounded like very good iodine protection from painting
2-1/2% of the skin area with Betadine. My check of ICRP23 suggested that for an
adult this would be about 450 square centimeters and for an infant about 75 sq
cm. I put this in the back of my brain as an interesting alternative to oral
administration without the potential reactions which might be associated with
oral administration. Has anyone ever heard of any further work in this area?
