Newsweek (Where is the next Chernobyl?)
Interesting to see the followup of the previous Newsweek story about the
next Chernobyl. It is quite obvious that a lot of "nuclear" is not in its
best condition in former Soviet Union (new report about the Semipalatinsk
area in Radiat. Environ. Biophysics BTW). What Newsweek did, however, was to
spice their articles with errors (like the "exploding cesium and strontium")
and misinterpretations - probably partly because the writer was too lazy to
check the facts.
When the feedback now is there ("Letters") Newsweek acknowledges that most
of the responses were in favor of nuclear power which is the political
bottom line but they avoid publishing errors - which most readers therefore
are not protected from - they now "know that strontium can explode because
they read it in some respectable article somewhere". The good thing about
participating with responses - even if you don't get them published is that
it gives you insight into the newspaper/magazine politics.
