RE: emergency responders

On Thursday evening, December 20, 1991 (I might have the date wrong, it was
the Thursday before Christmas), a courier truck loaded with
radiopharmaceuticals was stolen from in front of a warehouse. The thieves
were apparently after drugs (not that kind, I'm sure). At about 6:00 a.m.,
the next morning, the owner of a neon sign company about two miles away came
to work, and found his parking lot strewn with radioactive packages and
pigs.

After three agencies with meters determined that there was no apparent
damage or release, the carrier involved began recovery and inventory of the
pigs. One was missing. Someone said "Oh, the policeman had one of those." It
wasn't me, and there were no local cops present. So we called and got the
responding officer back out. "Yeah, I found that around the corner at a tire
company that was broken into, and BROUGHT IT DOWN HERE TO THE FIRE
DEPARTMENT (emphasis added)."

We called the fire department. The local engine company came out. "Yeah, we
TOOK THAT OVER TO THE HAZMAT TEAM (emphasis added)."

The HazMat team came out, with the vial in a zip-top bag. Surveys showed no
contamination of anyone involved, and no release from the vial, thank
goodness.

Maybe we need a convenient phrase, "foils tree, let it be"

Radsafers-

Would anyone wish to share any experiences (either good or bad)
regarding fire or ambulance response to radiation use areas?

A co-worker is preparing a presentation to fire and emergency medical
personnel and wishes to relate some real life experiences-- names of
institutions will NOT be used. He will focus on responses to
non-nuclear facilities.

Thanks in advance, Bill Fendt University of Delaware wfendt@udel.edu
