RE: Misuse, Susan Gawarecki's response

Gerald,

Yah sure me and my staff do room decon. [Run a one man shop here] I always
try to have housekeeping wax the floor prior to a patient. I don't use
razor blades, any contamination usually comes up pretty easily from a
freshly waxed floor. Now if we could just wax the toilet and sink.

Thanks for your efforts.

Peter

Peter:

Reading between the lines (or between the tiles), I suspect you are involved
with decontaminating after thyroid treatments. If it is any help to you, we
have found that it helps to have the custodians put down a double layer of
floor wax before we prep the room. Should something get past the
plastic-backed paper, we scrape up the coating of wax with a razor blade and
the iodine is gone (most of the time). After a while, the cracks get filled
up with wax, so even they are not a problem.

Hope this helps.

...BTW I think a campaign to get sheet vinyl flooring made the standard lab
floor would have a lot higher cost benefit ratio than trying to find
root
causes and make corrective actions for misuse of radioactive materials.
99+% of every lab I've been in has 1 foot square tiles with cracks that
accumulate all kinds of stuff, and make decon a night mare if it is
needed.
