Data Available on Radionuclides

Data Available on Radionuclides

EPA is revising the current radionuclides regulation, which has been in
effect since 1977, and is setting a standard for uranium as required by
the 1986 amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act. To support this
effort, EPA has published a notice of data availability for
radionuclides (alpha emitters, beta & photon emitters, radium 226 & 228,
and uranium) in drinking water. New information is available on health
effects from exposure to radionuclides in drinking water, occurrence,
treatment options, monitoring requirements, and analytical
methods. Data concerning the costs and benefits of several regulatory
options is available and, EPA is soliciting public comment on a number
of issues raised by this new information. EPA is evaluating final
regulatory options in light of these additional data and analyses and
plans to, in accordance with a court agreement, publish a final rule in
November of 2000. The Notice of Data Availability and additional
information are available at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/radionuc.html
on the Internet.
