Re: Medical training war stories

Thanks again for the comments and "war stories." I believe that part of the
problem is a decline in the quality of pre-medical undergraduate education.
Most of what these doctors don't seem to know is taught in freshman
chemistry, which they all had to take. We used to require a regular,
one-year physical chemistry course of all pre-meds, and when I was a postdoc
at U. of Colorado, I taught a three-week physical chemistry refresher to the
first-year med students (but that was a long time ago). So I have a
suggestion: can the HPS mount a postgraduate course especially for doctors?
Could some medical school give credit for it so doctors would take it? It
seems to me that a two-week intensive course would do it, since basic atomic
structure should not be new to an M. D. (at least I hope so). I would be
happy to assist in such a course (help teach it).

I would also add that many doctors I know do have adequate knowledge about
the effects of ionizing radiation -- that was why I was surprised to find
one who didn't, and why I asked the question in the first place.
