John,  the reference books I have say that sprayed asbestos or mineral fiber covering on steel columns has a fire resistance rating of roughly 2hrs per inch of thickness (more precise numbers depend on construction details, materials, quality, etc.).

I heard that there was a decision to NOT use fireproofing asbestos or similar material on the WTC towers. This was a decision by the architect!  He said that this fact lead to the collapse of the buildings when the fuel from the fuel for the plane weakened the steel to the point of yielding.  Seems to me that to get fuel into a containment without windows or other weaknesses would be nearly impossible.  My sister is very concerned about her nearby nuclear plant and was encouraged to read the NRC analysis.
