>Jim, this news item raises more questions than it can begin to answer. It

seems to be an attempt by the newspaper to sensationalize a supposed event

>and to play on nuclear fears and emotions. Is this news item the first

public communication or is it anywhere in the scientific literature?

Something like this will hopefully never appear in the scientific

literature!!!

> How was it known that the contamination peaked in 1964 if the study was

still in progress or completed before 1964?

This is well known, because it happened all over the world, that Sr-90

concentrations showed a maximum in 1964, whether it was in precipitation, in

milk, in teeth, in bones etc. This is therefore, because Sr-90 accumulated

in the environment and in the atmosphere and when the Sovjetunion, the USA

and Great Britain agreed to stop atmospheric tests in 1962 it took until

1964 before the maximum environmental contamination was reached (it takes

time for the contamination in the atmosphere to be deposited). A large

number of studies have been performed in several countries (I have done one

myself), so this fact is excellently documented. (The same is by the way

true for C-14 and tritium.)

> What should exposed people worry about or do when it is said to be to

late to do anything about it?

It is really disgusting that people are made afraid with such unqualified

claims, which lack any science and credibility.

> For those exposed, what are the consequences already found? What cancer

levels and genetic damage has been found in these folks?

> How was the study an influence on or reason for introducing the 1963

Test Ban Treaty?

This study has clearly nothing to do with the Atmospheric Test Ban Treaty.

The reasons for this treaty was obviously that the levels of radioactivity

in the environment and in mankind rose continuously. This was known, this

was published, nothing was kept secret, there are enough reports and

scientific papers available. There was a group of scientists (and maybe

politicians) who fought for this treaty - Linus Pauling was the one who was

the most active (I do not know about the structure of the group). (Btw:

Linus Pauling is the only person who was awarded two full Nobel Prizes - one

in chemistry and one for peace - and he sure deserved both of them.)

>If it was covert, how was it even known at that time?

As I explained above, nothing was covert. It is the usual automatic comment

in connection with a lot of scientific nonsense.
