Nuclear reactors at BNL get new review

Hello all,

Does anyone have any feedback for me on either of the two "consultants"

mentioned in the article below? I'm not familiar with their names.

Thanks

Nuclear reactors at BNL get new review

Apr. 9 2002 -- 04:51:31 PM EST

A local environmental group plans to do its own review of the cleanup of

Brookhaven National Lab's three closed reactors.

East Hampton-based STAR Foundation Tuesday said it has commissioned an

independent study of the environmental, safety and health issues related to

the cleanup and disposition of the three closed reactors at Brookhaven Lab.

BNL shut down the reactors in 1968, 1999 and 2000 and already has begun

cleaning up groundwater contamination.

The group hired two consultants, Gordon Thompson, a reactor engineer who is

the director of the Institute for Resource and Security Studies in

Cambridge, Mass., and Bernd Franke, scientific director of the Institute for

Energy and Environmental Research, in Heidelberg, Germany.

"This study will provide an independent analysis of the environmental,

safety and health risks associated with the long-term disposition of these

reactors," said Scott Cullen, general counsel for the group. "The study will

give the public independent information about the potential environmental

hazards and human health risks."
