1. I had no idea how coal was transported until I moved to the west after graduate school and saw coal unit trains. Then I kind of figured it out.
2. I have no idea what the "average person" -- whoever that is -- knows or even cares about. Yes, that's elitist. hooray for the elite.
3. Now for anyone who has shown the slightest interest, there is the Executive summary to the DEIS, one for the FEIS, the booklet DOE has published, innumerable web sites, innumerable news articles many of which are actually pretty accurate, numbers of TV and radio programs that have dealt with the subject -- lots more information than anyone ever had about coal transprotation.
