A DOE Question
Looking for information from DOE facilities on how you apply/interpret DOE-STD-1098-99 Article 552.1.f NOTE: below is an example of how we apply it to one of our systems.
552.1 "routine radiation monitoring programs should be established to ensure that surveys are performed at a frequency that is consistent with the existing and potential hazards and activities planned in the area. The following survey frequencies are suggested and should be modified as necessary to ensure area hazards are adequately characterized, based upon facility-specific experience"
f. Monthly, for potentially contaminated ducts, piping, and hoses in use outside radiological facilities.
AN EXAMPLE:
We have a pneumatic sample transfer system between two of our radiological facilities and the LAB (under negative pressure and internally contaminated). The outside piping is located high overhead and is monitored with sensors and alarms during transfers so that we verify the sample has gone where it is supposed to (samples are high radiation and high contamination). We survey the piping where it leaves and enters the facilities on a monthly basis and whenever anyone has to work within the diverter boxes (inside the facilities). We do not survey the transfer line overhead outdoors.
Question: Since we monitor all transfers for proper arrival of samples and we routinely survey the highest potential problem areas, do you feel that the intent of the article is met or do you feel additional surveying of the above ground piping outside the facility is required.
Looking for opinions and examples of similar situations.
