Re: Surviving a Dirty Bomb

A little more information on KI,

NCRP Report No. 138 (October 2001) indicates that KI is of limited value in adults but "recent experience from Chernobyl indicates that the thyroid of the fetus and the child is likely to be quite sensitive to induction of thyroid cancer following radiation exposure. As a result there is reason to have a plan to distribute KI to females and children if a terrorist scenario is suspected to involve a nuclear weapon or some other major release of radioiodine."

This may not be so pertinent to most dirty bomb scenarios, but is good information nonetheless.

The major down side to KI- as has been pointed out- allergic reactions.

Current FDA guidance concludes that, "...studies following the Chernobyl accident support the etiologic role of relatively small doses of radioiodine in the dramatic increase in thyroid cancer among exposed children. Furthermore, it appears that the increased risk occurs with a relatively short latency. Finally, the Polish experience supports the use of KI as a safe and effective means by which to protect against thyroid cancer ..." ("Guidance - Potassium Iodide as a Thyroid Blocking Agent in Radiation Emergencies," FDA, December 2001)

The opinions expressed are strictly mine.

It's not about dose, it's about trust.

Curies forever.
