Can anyone suggest a suitable method of doing out
a broad brush test to separate crushed ore samples into two
groups, those that have less definitely less than 10 Bq/g and those which
may have more than 10 Bq/g. The assessment confirming that a sample
had a gross activity of less than 10 Bq/g would have to be generally
acceptable. to purchasers of the ore and to local regulatory
authorities. The following equipment is available.
40 mm diameter Zinc Sulphide alpha probe, 40 mm
diameter pancake GM detector, 40 mm diameter 1 mm thick Sodium Iodide low energy
gamma detector, scalars for sample times of 1 second to 4
hours.
Are the following assumptions valid?
1 gram of ore dust sample spread over a 38 mm
diameter dish. gives a maximum absorber of 89 mg/cm squared. Transmission
of beta energy more than 100 keV is more than 50%.
