Re: Electronic Dosimeters

Hi Kai,

the following is the reference for a standard published by the

International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for electronic dose meters.

The IEC is an international standards organisation based in Switzerland

(www.iec.ch). The American representatives to the IEC appear to be the ANSI

(see the section following the information on the standard). This Standard

is the one that we used to produce a tender specification for our company.

Regards, Julian

IEC 61283 (1995-03) - Radiation Protection Instrumentation - Direct reading

personal dose equivalent (rate) monitors - X, gamma and high energy beta

radiation

SCOPE 'This international standard applies to monitors which are worn on

the trunk of the body and are used for the measurement of personal dose

equivalent, or personal dose equivalent rate, to its wearer from external

X, and gamma radiation and from high-energy beta radiation.

It applies to monitors used for measuring the personal dose equivalent

(rate) from X and gamma radiation of energies 50 keV to 1.5 MeV and beta

radiation of maximum energy greater than 2.0 MeV. If the monitor is to be

used to measure personal dose equivalent (rate) for photon energies up to

10 MeV, e.g. at a nuclear reactor installation where 6 MeV photon radiation

is present, it will be necessary to determine the response at the

appropriate energy.'
