Re: NY Times - nuke guards swamped by overtime
Norm,
My opinion, not my company's or worksite:
Federalizing these guards will not increase their professionalism or
efficiency. Proper training, attitude, and respect for their tasks by other
people will. There is a lot to be said of the sense of ownership and
teamwork taken by good security people that are employed by the plant in
the same way as the other workers. Divorcing them from the other workers
will cause distrust and alienation at a time when this will do the most
harm. Federalizing them also allows the security forces to abuse their
so-called powers, such as calling a small knife or child's bow a "firearm"
for security purposes. (Yes, I have seen this.) Perhaps we should be
discussing permanent employment by the plants instead of the practice of
"rent-a-cops", although a large number of these fall into the "very good"
category.
The overtime issue is settling down at facilities as their hiring and
training catches up with the new demands. By the way, this is after the
severe cuts the security forces were forced to start taking 10-11 years ago
after the NRC said the larger numbers were not needed.
