Re: Food Irradiation Alert - etc.

Title: Re: Food Irradiation Alert - etc.

Incidentally, according to a new AECL 50th anniversary poster featuring, among other, more well-known historical milestone-type things, is the September 1965 start-up of "the world's first commercial food irradiation facility, designed and built by AECL, located at Mont St-Hillaire, Quebec."

Mont St-Hillaire is about 30 km east-south-east of Montreal, and is a popular hiking spot.
Half the mountain is an ecological preserve maintained by McGill U, not accessible to the public (the Gault estate, I believe its called). No idea where the irradiation facility might have been located.

Today the only commercial-scale food irradiation facility is at the Centre d'Irradiation du Canada (CIC) located in Laval, Quebec, which is just north of Montreal. Its operated  jointly by MDS Nordion and the Institut Armand-Frappier.
