RE:Claus Helberg, Real 'hero of Telemark'
Thanks for the update. My grandfather and great-uncle both were engineers at the "tungt vann" (heavy water) plant in Rjukan during the war. During the bombing raids on the plant, they had to stay in the plant to keep the equipment running while the German guards headed for the bomb shelters. Bombing was not very effective as the valley was so steep that most of the bombs landed in the switch yards and ancillary equipment areas and not the plant which was built into the side of the mountain. One of the bombs caused a 12-ton boulder to bounce down the mountain side and severely damage the house in which my great-uncle was living at the time. Luckily, there were three stories to slow down the boulder enough so that it stopped on the first floor and not penetrate to the basement where my great-aunt and the rest of their family was seeking shelter.
