Thyroid cancer is increasing among adolescents and young adults in Belarus 

exposed to Chernobyl fallout in 1986 and since, according to data released 

April 24 by the French Institute of Radiological Protection & Nuclear Safety 

(IRSN). In its annual compilation of information related to the April 26, 

1986 accident, presented yesterday in Paris, IRSN notes that the thyroid 

cancer upsurge that has affected children under 15 since 1990 began to 

decline in 1995 and is at a very low level today. But the number of thyroid 

cancer cases continues to increase among those aged 2-16 at the time of the 

accident, now between 15 and 29. Preliminary data show between 140 and 180 

new cases each year since 1999, and IRSN's Margot Tirmarche said the 

epidemic likely isn't over. Studies have also established a correlation 

between doses received and occurrence of thyroid cancer; Tirmarche said an 

international study is now working on quantifying cancer risk compared to 

exposure, taking into account factors such as genetic predisposition.
