Metal detectors consist of a transmitting coil of wire and a receiving coil 

of wire; in principle these are like a radio transmitter and receiver. If 

there is an electrical conductor between the tranmitter and the receiver, 

the "eddy currents" change the induced emf in the receiving coil.
