It seems when somebody says the glass is half full, someone always rises

to the occasion to say that it is half empty. Does this line sound at

all familiar?

Of course Michael's story is credible! A colleague of mine goes to Haiti

for charity work every once in a while. You would be hard-pressed to

find people any poorer. Yet, I am told that the Haitians are the most

proud, inspiring, and giving people he has every met despite their

having barely anything but rags on their backs (some do not even have

that much). The struggle for survival, in the absence of violence, is

often seen to bring-out the best in people, particularly in forcing them

to rely on each other. Greed and affluence almost inevitably brings-out

the worst. Case-in-point, how many Hollywood movie stars have

well-adjusted and happy children? There is definitely something to what

Michael is saying. The most affluent societies are often the most

depressed and the most socially maladjusted. I agree, if your vocation

is your vacation, then one ought to be happy for it.

This would be much more credible if stated by someone with a < $40K job!

I've found that most of the "money is not important" statements come

from those who already have enough.
