Altamont Pass is on a major migratory flyway.  The article says total 

estimated killed are 44,000 birds, not just the endangered ones or 

raptors in particular.  I've seen huge numbers of hawks, vultures, and 

other birds of prey migrating along similar flyways; you would be amazed.
