If this took place through the democratic process, why did Eisenhower,

Kennedy and Johnson have to call out the military to allow blacks to go to

segregated schools. The process was started not by the elected officials but

by the appointed judiciary but it was definately against public opinion. I

know that a majority of the people in the country at that time believed that

separation was correct. I remember seeing water fountains for "whites" and

"coloreds" even in Washington, DC.



Also contrary to public opinion the United States is a republic and not a
