 From what I've read about smoking, the inhaled chemicals impair the 

ability of cells to repair themselves.  This would explain in part why 

radiation exposures from screening cause an increase of cancer.  However 

that increase should not lead one to extrapolate the results to the 

non-smoking public or even to smokers who gave it up years ago.
