SEVENTH

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM

2005

Change and continuity in radiation protection

Organised by

The Society for Radiological Protection

12 - 17 June 2005

Cardiff, UK

Co-sponsors: German-Swiss Radiation Protection Association; French

Society for Radiation Protection; Dutch Society for Radiation

Protection; Spanish Radiation Protection Society

INTRODUCTION

Following our previous International Symposia, the most recent being

the very successful Southport `99 symposium, the Society for

Radiological Protection is delighted to be able to invite you to take

part in its 7th International Symposium.

We are especially pleased that we are able to hold our Symposium in

the fabulous venue of Cardiff City Hall. 2005 is Cardiff's Centenary

year and there are certainly going to be many events celebrating this

special occasion.

I look forward to seeing you in Cardiff.

Chris Perks

Chairman, Organising Committee, Cardiff 2005

CHANGE AND CONTINUITY IN RADIATION PROTECTION

The ICRP is due to publish new recommendations in mid-2005. The

involvement of stakeholder groups in decision making is increasingly a

feature of regulation and standard setting and, for the first time,

the ICRP has published a framework based on "scientific and

ethical-philosophical principles" for the protection of non-human

species from ionising radiation. Self-assessment by small users

places greater responsibility on Radiation Protection Advisers and the

impacts of the OSPAR commitments on discharges are now being felt.

This Symposium seeks to address issues arising from the need to

accommodate change in approaches to radiation protection, embracing

greater stakeholder involvement and maintaining continuity in

standards and professionalism.

PARTICIPATION IN THE SYMPOSIUM

Scientific Delegates can register for the whole week or for a single

day. Registration for the week entitles participants to receive the

Symposium Proceedings, participate in a scientific visit on Wednesday

afternoon, attend the social events including the Symposium Banquet

and includes lunches on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, together with

coffee and tea during scientific sessions. Single day registration

includes the Symposium Proceedings and lunch, coffee and tea during

the scientific sessions.

Social Participants accompanying Scientific Delegates are encouraged

to attend. Registration includes the evening receptions and the

Symposium Banquet together with the Social visit on Wednesday

afternoon. There will also be an optional daily programme arranged

for Social Participants (see later section of this leaflet for

details).

EXHIBITION

A trade exhibition for manufacturers and service providers will form

an important part of the Symposium. It will be held in the Lower

Hall. To ensure maximum delegate footfall through the exhibition, the

catering points for teas, coffees and lunch will be situated in this

Hall. The exhibition will enable Scientific Delegates to update their

knowledge of the comprehensive range of products available to those

involved professionally in radiation protection, by direct contact

with the manufacturers and those who provide services in this field.

Potential exhibitors should contact the SRP administrative office

(contact details on the back of this brochure) for a detailed

exhibition prospectus. All exhibitors will receive up to two

complimentary scientific delegate registrations as part of the stand

package. Exhibitors are also invited to offer sponsorship for the

Symposium.

CARDIFF

Cardiff will be celebrating its centenary year in 2005. It is the

capital of Wales and offers a wide variety of attractions including

art galleries, museums, concert venues and, of course, the Millennium

Stadium. Cardiff is a very compact city and most of the attractions

are within easy reach of the centre. Our Symposium is being held in

the City Hall of which we have exclusive use. There is an extensive

range of hotels within walking distance of our venue.

Cardiff is easy to get to:

* By air: Cardiff International airport is very close with regular

services from UK and European destinations

* By road: via the M5 and M4

* By rail: frequent direct services from London and the rest of the UK

For more information about Cardiff please visit:

www.thecardiffinitiative.co.uk.

ACCOMMODATION

There is a wide variety of excellent accommodation within walking

distance of the City Hall. We have secured preferential rates and

allocations through Cardiff Conference Bureau. Please visit our web

site www.srp-uk.org/events/cardiff2005 for the application form which

you can download, complete and either fax or email. A 10% deposit

will be payable.

Please book as early as possible, as there are likely to be many other

attractions and events in Cardiff's Centenary year.

of radiation protection. The scientific programme will include both

oral and poster presentations. The programme, which may be subject to

change depending on the abstracts received, is given below:

Afternoon: Regulation, operation and the role of the RPA;

Break out session: Instrumentation

protection; Break out session: Education

Thursday 16th

There will be opportunities to discuss the posters with authors at

specific times in the programme.

SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS

Authors wishing to present a paper at the Symposium should submit an

abstract by email to admin@srp-uk.org or use the form enclosed with

this brochure. Abstracts should clearly describe the content of the

paper, give an indication of the results and conclusions.

Contributions are preferred that emphasise current developments of

long-term relevance to radiological protection. Abstracts should

provide sufficient technical detail for peer review by the Scientific

Programme Committee against this criterion. Abstracts should be in

the region of 250 words plus tables and figures as required, to fit a

single side of A4 and must be in English.

Abstracts must be received by 17 September 2004. Abstracts received

after this date will not be considered.

KEY DATES

17 September 2004: Last date for receipt of abstracts;

30 November 2004: Notification of acceptance and despatch of authors'

kits;

31 March 2005: Last date for receipt of final papers;

20 May 2005: Last date for receipt of presentation material

ACCEPTANCE OF PAPERS

Authors will be notified by 30 November 2004 whether their paper has

been accepted for presentation at the Symposium and whether it is to

be an oral or poster paper. Please note that all presenters are

required to register for the Symposium as scientific delegates. An

author's kit, including full instructions for the preparation of the

paper and its presentation at the Symposium, will be sent to authors

whose papers have been accepted. All papers accepted will be included

in the proceedings, provided they are prepared in accordance with the

instructions. Oral and poster papers will be given equal weight in

the proceedings. Each paper will be limited to no more than six pages

of the proceedings. Texts must be in English. Failure to submit a

paper suitable for inclusion in the proceedings will normally

disqualify the author from presenting the paper. Papers must be

received by 31 March 2005. Copyright of papers accepted for

presentation at the Symposium generally passes to SRP. Instances

where copyright cannot be assigned will be addressed on a case-by-case

basis.

METHODS OF PRESENTATION

Papers to be presented at the Symposium will fall into one of three

categories: invited papers, oral papers and poster papers. Invited

papers will be presented by leading experts and will provide overviews

of major developments in radiation protection. Proffered papers will

be assigned to oral or poster papers by the Scientific Programme

Committee on the basis of information provided in the abstract. Poster

papers will be preferred for papers that are considered to be of

primary interest to specialists in a particular area. In addition, it

is noted that papers with a high content of diagrams, illustrations or

mathematics are sometimes more suitable for poster presentation.

Specific sessions will be held at which the posters can be viewed and

discussed with their authors. For oral presentations, PowerPointr

presentations are preferred. Authors should ensure that their

presentations do not contain more information than can reasonably be

assimilated during the time of display and be clear to the whole of

the audience.

LANGUAGE AND PROCEEDINGS

The language of the Symposium will be English and the proceedings will

be made available to participants at the beginning of the Symposium.

YOUNGER CONTRIBUTORS

Younger contributors are encouraged to present their work. Some

financial assistance may be available for authors under 35 at 12 June

2005. Further information on this matter is available from SRP

administrative office on request.

THE JACK MARTIN PRIZE

The Jack Martin Prize will be awarded to the best oral or poster

presentation. For further details go to
