One example

In the previous version they deal with the fact that Japan has low breast 
cancer rates despite their nuclear program, by saying that this is due to the 
fact that Japanese women do not consume dairy products, red meat or 
freshwater fish (where they argue that the "contamination" is highest). 

Their approach is simple.  You look for correlations which support your 
thesis.  If there are points that don't fit (e.g., Japan) you explain them 
away on an ad hoc basis. If a particular correlation doesn't fit at all, you 
don't include it.  If there are confounders that complicate your 
interpretation, you ignore them.
