Radiation Safety Officer, Grade 14 

 Environmental Health and Safety

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Description: Under the administrative Supervision of the Director 
of Environmental Health and Safety, and reporting to the Chair of 
the Radiation Safety Committee at Morningside for technical matters, 
the incumbent manages the daily operation of the radiation safety 
program and staff; recommends and implements procedures to facilitate 
the safe and efficacious use of radioactive sources in research 
and education at the Morningside, Nevis and Lamont-Doherty campuses; 
administers all necessary licenses, amendments and registrations, 
and assures complete and timely compliance with all federal, state 
and city regulatory requirements; develops safety policies and procedure 
controls and approves purchases, receipt, storage, use and disposal 
of all radioactive materials; oversees shipment and disposal programs; 
inspects and surveys all laboratories and facilities that use radioactive 
materials and maintains records; monitors personnel and environment 
exposures and maintains appropriate dosimetry records; assures that 
(prospective) licensees and users are properly trained in radiation 
safety and university policy on the safe use of radioactive materials; 
develops education programs, administers and monitors film badge 
program; acts as liaison with academic and administrative units, 
as well as regulatory agencies; position requires extensive field 
work and hands-on involvement; must be able to respond to emergencies 
day and night; performs other related duties as assigned. MINORITIES

Qualifications: Master's degree in environmental science, health 
physics, engineering or related field required. Doctorate desirable. 
Health physics, or related certificate required. minimum of five 
years' related experience in daily management of a radiation safety 
program for a research or teaching institution. Excellent oral and 
written communication skills and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously 
with faculty and staff. Familiarity with computerized database management 
required.
