        We have been using a compactor since the mid '70's very 
successfully.  It is a Consolidated Baling Machine Co., (800) 231-9286.  Our 
waste is typical laboratory, tissue culture waste with a lot of 
polycarbonate plasticware that compacts were well.  We can get about 6:1 
compaction ratio and weights up to 250 lbs per drum.  We don't use spring 
locks but do leave the platten down after compaction.  It is not a cheap 
machine, but it has saved the University over its 20 year life many times 
its purchase price.
