waste disposal

The question came up recently about the disposal of waste. Here at the
Indiana University Medical Center, we do not directly charge for waste
disposal. We have a 10% surcharge on the purchase of radioactive
material which goes into our budget. Our department has a separate
budget line for waste disposal. Our Environmental Health & Safety Dept
also does not charge for waste so there is no benefit in mixing chemical
wastes with radioactive to make them mixed. We encourage the survey of
materials (especially where P-32 is used) to check for contamination
before disposing of items as radioactive. In the future, we hope we do
not have to deal with sending as much waste away due to the installation
of an incinerator and new waste facility.
