The Ludlum Model 3 is a pure ratemeter. Without knowing what probe it'll be
used with one cannot give definitive advice. Generally, though, if the meter
reads in cpm, it should be calibrated first with a pulser, then with
radiation standard(s) appropriate to the application/probe (contamination
surveys, areal radiation surveys, etc.) If it reads in mR/h, Cs137 is the
most common gamma standard, but the above observations apply. Note that
you'll need to know the HV at which the Model 3 is set, since this can be
crucially important to the proper functioning of the meter/probe system, and
the HV can be easily changed via an open pot on the top panel of the
instrumant.
