While the primary beam will not generate any
x-rays of concern you do have to worry about
back-streaming electrons.  For some kinds of
accelerators (which is what these are) stray 
electrons are accelerated back towards the ion 
source.  The Varian brand machines I have
seen are well shielded for this, but it is
certainly something that needs to be checked.

Note that the next HPS Mid-year meeting (San Jose,
Jan 1997) is on HP of Radiation Producing Machines.
Quite timely.
